When it comes to singing, there are a lot of opinions on when the right age is to start singing lessons. Some feel that you should not start to focus on technique until the ages of 12 or 13. Others feel that its ok to start lessons at 5 or 6.
Lets start this with a question. How did you learn the alphabet? Do we play songs and sing to our children as infants? Children will repeat what they hear. CHILDREN ARE GOING TO SING!
Starting a child with singing lessons is not about age or the capability of being a strong child singer, but more about being able to work in a lesson environment.
If your thinking of starting your child with voice lessons here are some things to consider:
- Can they focus their energy for 30 minutes?
- Will they be able to practice independently or with the help of a parent regularly?
- Can they read? not music but just lyrics to start.
Instead of focusing on what age to start voice lessons, I would use these questions above as the benchmark of whether a child is ready for a lesson environment.
